On February 12, 2008, the board of education adopted intendent Dr. Thomas Van Soelen and I met with Decatur child care providers to inform them about the proposed calendars and to get their feedback. The Decatur Recreation Department, the Decatur-DeKalb YMCA, Color Wheel, the Decatur Housing Authority, and the Boys and Girls Club were all invited. They all responded positively to the proposals and said that they could provide programming for students during the intervention periods. We all left the meeting believing that the October and February breaks could be a very enriching time for all of our children to receive the support they need or to give them the opportunity to explore special interests.

Employees, students, parents, and school council members are encouraged to voice their calendar preferences and concerns by participating in CSD's on-line survey. The survey will be open until March 21, 2008, and can be accessed from the CSD homepage at www.csdecatur.org [ http://www.csdecatur.org/ ] . Opinions may also be submitted in writing to the principal's office at each school.

Two public information and input sessions will be held on the following dates:

Monday, March 3rd 7:00 pm Clairemont Elementary School Auditorium
Friday, March 7th 11:00 am Renfroe Middle School Media Center

Developing a suitable school year calendar is a process. The calendar committee has not yet made any decisions, and they are genuinely interested in receiving your feedback.
